Me too, but until then there is my buddy Malcolm Barrett from high school, who for all intents and purposes has been successful in "the biz". With guest spots on the Sopranos, Psych, and Law and Order to name a few, and with a few cancelled shows under his belt (can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs) I would say that acting and being generally an entertainer has worked out for him. I'm back! Again! For Now...

Every few years I stop blogging and then start again when I realize that there is still so much information to share. This is the transient nature of blogs after all. So I have started again. I will reload the last.fm plug-in so that you guys don't think I only listen to Mates of State. Also there seems to be a new layout editor for Blogger, might as well give that a try although the days of hacking up your code and putting in CSS went away with the popularity of myspace (thank goodness) maybe it's time for this old dog to get a face lift. The links at the side should still be working but may be outdated (many of friends, like me, have stopped blogging) so I will be editing that as well.

Now for the story that made me rethink giving this whole thing up, a story from non-other than my favorite hypocritical country...China!

It seems that some of their "professional" photographers need a better understanding of Photoshop, green screens and general photographic technique. I could have done a better job on the originals and the edits with just my iPhone. Pathetic.

Has anyone ever heard of Psion? They are a maker of rugged computing solutions are currently locked in a trademark battle with Intel over the use of the term "Netbook". I am not sure how to feel about this. I mean I want to respect the law here which says that after registration of a trademark and barring that you don't get out of the business of discontinue the product that you trademarked it can still be protected. On the other hand Psion hasn't created a new netbook in many years and discontinued the last one they sold a few years back. I guess read on and leave comments, it should be an interesting case to watch.

Back in bean town, the trip to NYC was pretty fun and the bus ride back was easy breezy. Here is some new information from the interwebs

Some not so surprising news about the apps that are flying out of the iPhone app store. Apparently these apps are not inspiring use past the first day after they have been downloaded. If you know anyone with an iPhone you have already seen this phenomenon. Take a gander at the screens and you'll probably see 4 to 5 pages of apps. Ask the individual how often they use them and I guarantee some of those apps have not ever been used once after downloading. This is not a problem however because if you think of the iPhone as a truly mini computer, or computing light there is bound to be software that you might need a few times but don't want to have to download over and over again. A good example would be the rocket cab app, this app uses your location and shows local cab companies. You may not need this every day or even every weekend, but when you do need it's gonna suck to have to download it at that time. If you're interested here are some more analytics from the app store.

News from Netflix reports that the company sees its future in streaming. They already have a streaming only service for Starz content and are considering adding content from other distributors like HBO or Showtime...

More news from the Pirate Bay Trial...A few days ago marked Day 5 in the trial and the prosecutors are not looking very good. Apparently neither is the defense.

Today i find myself doing some remote blogging from NYC (my hometown). I must say that it is awesome to be back here. There really is no place like it, and while Boston is a pretty ok substitute nothing beats being back home. I have caught up on some emails and have a few things to log after the jump.

First a look at the real G2, HTC's new mobile handset the Dream was announced at the Mobile handset conference. Pretty snazzy but will is snatch the hearts and minds of the tech elite? I hope so, even though I own an iPhone those lazy fockers at apple won't do anything with any expediency unless they have some good competition. HTC is going to be that competition (I say they already are, just not in the states).

More news on smart phones as a new one, branded the Bar Of Soap promises to not only switch screen views (from portrait to landscape) with the help of accelerometers but also switch phone modes. Hold the phone like a camera and the camera function pops up, hold it to your face like a phone and a keypad pops up. Considering how sketchy this switch can be on an iPhone, I don't know that I like my phone functions to be tied into orientation but more power to them.

Now on to Wisconsin where they have just suspended a girl for texting during a math class. Now good etiquette says that when in a setting such as a a class room or boardroom texting should be kept to a minimum (unless you're the boss). it's rude and distracting to be sure, but a suspension? Apparently the girl lied about having a phone and tried to hide it in her ass area, so she knew she was guilty and some punishment should be dolled out but the police report I think is a bit much.

More news from the trial against my favorite source of new media, The Pirate Bay. Apparently not only have 50% of the charges been dropped, but the defense lawyers have requested that all other charges be dismissed based on the inability of the prosecution to prove their case. Also because they are so lovable, the 4 owners of the site have gotten an unsolicited following of hackers who are tarnishing the sites of those that are prosecuting the co-owners, the first one in the cross hairs being the IFPI. Serves 'em right, but it is not helping the case of those on trial and incidentally one of the owners, Peter Sunde, has asked that the hackers stop, claiming

"Our case is going quite well as most of you have noticed. In the light of that it feels very bad that people are hacking websites which actually puts us in a worse light than we need to be in"

Sorry Peter...

And for fans of Yelp, the popular user driven food review site, it seems that the admins and reps of the site are getting a little mafioso on that ass. Restaurants owners are claiming that the reps are calling the restaurants soliciting ad purchase agreements and letting the owners know that if they DO buy an add, maybe they (the reps of the site) could take care of some of those negative reviews that the restaurant has received. If this is true is pretty terrible and proves that anything that humans touch that involved money turns to shit. Even the noblest of causes.

So I am at the beginning of two weeks off from work. My company has unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) shut its doors for the next two weeks to save some dollars. Apparently shutting our doors for a week saves a significant amount of jobs, I would rather not go to work then have me or someone I know (or even don't know) get laid off so this is pretty cool. Besides the fact that it is eating away at my built up vacation like no other (don't ask me to do anything in 2010, I will not have any vacation time), it does make me feel like I am back in college for a x-mas break or something. All the same, I have a few things to share today, starting with those crazy folks who work for the state governement of Utah.

Apparently the entire government was taken by a 419 type scam, the likes of which have been around for several years. A popular internet meme in the short time that we have had to build and recognize such memes, any self respecting connected American should never fall for this. Tragic, but what do you expect from the home state of the Mormons... (sorry Mormons, that was obligatory. I really don't have a problem with your religion, at least the mainstream parts. Read aloud, all religion origin stories sound ridiculous).

And yesterday was the start of what's sure to be a closely watched trial between the runners of the site "The Pirate Bay" and the IFPI. Reportedly if the case goes the way everyone thinks it's going to go, many of the interweb's torrents will die or become increasingly unreliable. Here's hoping that people don't vote the way they have been conditioned to vote.

Lastly, I saw this when reading about a competition/showcase to design future cityscapes. Pretty cool...

CES is over and with it the promise of a new tomorrow is gone...for now. In the wake of the largest Consumer Electronics Show in the World let's look at some new news from the Tech world:

Don't Share your shiny, new drm-free iTunes tracks...They might be the pieces of data that do you in. Not with the RIAA mind you since they have stopped suing file sharers (finally!) but with random heads that just probably should not have your personal info.

Remember the CueCat? I actually had one of these things, and really only liked it because of the handy dandy LED that shone out of it. Well it seems Microsoft is kickin it old school (albeit in a much wider spectrum of hardware devices).

Good news for those that peruse the "gray" market of video. DivX has added .mkv support to its latest codec. Will there be good playback of .mkv's using WMP (audio usually sux, even using the CCP codec pack)? Maybe, it would surely be nicer to use than VLC or even Miro which opens slower than acrobat trying to handle a 5mb PDF file...

And lastly, on a personal note I would like to say a big "F U!" to Ron. The other day we had a debate about the usefulness of Bat Wings and whether human sized bat wings of bird wings would be of more use. Well it seems the US Military has taken my side (Bat wings are better) and plan to integrate the basic mechanics of bat flight into UAV's in the future.

On NYE this year 9 Muslim passengers were kicked off an air tran flight because of a comment made by one of the 9 passengers which was overheard and reported by another passenger on the plane. I Used to Sleep on The Floor...

Often during my many years of playing Rugby I would need to go out to the bars and clubs after having played several hours of the rough sport followed by a few more hours of drinking during the after game. Anyone who has tried to drink after a day of doing any sort of physical activity and not pass out will tell you that it is much much harder than it seems. My problem would be that I would always feel really tired after getting home from the after party, but knew that if I actually took a nap in my bed then I was pretty much done for the night, which would upset my friends and really upset the locks on my door as well as my door frame (as my so-called friends busted down my door to drag me out). So I started a habit of sleeping on the floor at the foot of my bed. The reasoning being that if you are really tired you will most likely sleep wherever it's quite and dark (my room), but that after the intense fatigue subsided the floor would cease to be really comfortable and you would eventually have to get up. If you don't just move from the floor to your bed then you should be golden. One of my favorite Sci-Fi shows might actually come to reality. Eureka is a show in which the main character is a sheriff of a town of the World's brightest scientists. Another topic I have been discussing is the use of American pop music snippets during the beach volleyball tournament. This, to me, is the absolute worst display of cultural overlap. Why would you single out one sport and choose to play American pop music interludes during the break (not to mention that this is the worst selection of Pop music I have heard in some time, Chumbawumba, really?!)? Has the Olympics suddenly become nothing more than a cheap NBA game? I guess I might be over-reacting but I expected a certain amount of deference and respect to be placed on the games as opposed to treating it like some run of the mill competition. agree with the main point in this story, that parental involvement is
definitely necessary to help push kids in the right direction when
using new technology. This is true for pretty much anything kids can
get their hands on. No matter what the device or tool is kids will
abuse it for their own enjoyment. Sometimes that abuse is beneficial
and sometimes it hurts them as is the case with computers. However the
Romanian study, like many other studies, cannot give you a complete
picture of the benefits that having a computer bestows upon the user.

was 12 when my Dad bought us out first computer, a 486 with 8mb of RAM.
Before that time I was using a word processor for writing reports. The
new computer didn't give me anything new in the way of academics. The
internet was just beginning, and writing reports was exactly the same,
although now I had a fancy laser printer instead of the Dot matrix
style printing of a word processor. I primarily used my computer for
games, and AOL connectivity when I finally got my 14.4 modem. I may
have even had the same stats that these Romanian kids had with their
computer in terms of less time watching tv and doing homework but what
the computer did give me was familiarity with the technology and a no
fear attitude when it came to discovering all that this new technology
had to offer. I learned about file formats and programs to run them by
looking at lo-res partially nude pictures of entertainment stars that I
received from a friend on a 3.5" floppy. I learned about hardware
architecture when my computer crapped out because of a busted power
supply. I familiarized myself with DOS and software installation as I
made the jump from Windows 3.1 to 95, and I learned about web pages
from the horrendous web page builder on AOL...version 3.0.

These
are all things that are not measured in a survey but which all
contributed to my semi-expertise with computers today, 15 years later.
The point is there are benefits that can't be readily measured by a
survey, parents, or even the kids that are using the devices that may
pop up years from now. Because a kid is playing solitaire and sharing
.mp3's on a LAN network and not writing the introduction to his
Master's thesis does not mean that the computer is being totally
misused. Also, who had the bright idea to ask children if using this
computer made them more open to going to college? What kind of answer
do you expect to receive from a kid who just found and loves
Minesweeper?

In the last few weeks I have had some minor problems with my desktop baby, and to my slight surprise I have been able to diagnose and fix both of them. Here's a quick rundown...

Problem 1: Loud ass noise coming from my computer while it's running.

This one was simple, it's gotta be the fan right? Sure, but which fan? A lot of new systems (desktops) have two fans, one for the power supply and one for the cpu. The CPU fan would have been a bitch to change, the power supply one, not so much. So I woke up on a Sunday (a few weeks ago) morning, took a ripper and began disassembling my PS. 12 screws and lots of dust later I got to the supply. I read online that there is usually a sprocket or some type of gear that you can apply oil to in order to minimize noise, unfortunately that was not the case for my supply. Instead I found a sticker and some basic circuitry under it. I cleaned out the supply box, spun the fan around and cleaned it out and put my PS back together followed by installing it back into my computer. Crossing my fingers I powered up only to be rebuffed by a sound that can only be described as "a sound that tells you something is definitely wrong". It was like a muted buzzer. Looking at the machine I noticed that my diagnostic lights were on. using my laptop to look up what they meant, I realized that an unseated RAM stick could be the cause. Opened up computer, reseat both sticks (2 512's), close up and reboot. Voila! Boot up and no noise whatsoever, in fact I think it might be running quieter than it did before.

Problem 2: I return home from work greeted by darkness on my first monitor and a blue screen on my second monitor (I run dual 19's)

Anyone who has ever owned a PC should be familiar with the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). It is a windows error screen that tells you nothing about what could possibly be causing the error, at least not to the layman which for all intents and purposes is all of us. "Page Fault in non page area"? "Fatal Exception"? Come on now, why put in a screen that tells you that you have an error but make it so that you can't even understand it. Thanks MSFT, dicks. The BSOD usually has some numbers on it like 0X0000007E or 0xF78aD3B4. Believe it or not, these actually mean something although the numbers generated can be caused by a mix of things so even if you knew what they meant you still would be lost. After checking many forum posts from my laptop (it is 1000x easier to diagnose a problem with google, in fact I can't imagine taking my machine to a computer repair shop anymore, I hope I don't have to eat that statement in the near future) I realized that I would need the Windows Recovery Console to diagnose this further. One HUGE problem, most CD's that come with a computer these days are not actually the XP install cd but some OEM (Original equipment manufacturer) cd with restore garbage programs on it. It may contain the files necessary to set up windows, but for doing diagnostic work it is useless. Thanks Dell for charging me for an OS but NOT giving me the shit I paid for, fuckin Mike.

Anyway, I borrowed a CD from work and began the diagnosis the next evening (after the original problem). By the way, I did read that a possible cause of the BSOD was a hardware failure of some type, be it HDD, RAM, Graphics card or PS Fan. Thinking that this was def a software problem I neglected to check my hardware. Besides, I ran the HDD scan from my boot menu which told me I had no problems. Also while looking for diagnostic tools I ran across BartPE, if you want to know more about pre-installed environments, check out this guys page. Pretty neat and easy to understand. All the same, I ran the recovery console and was sent to a dos prompt, wait, what? I thought this thing was supposed to repair my windows, not have me looking at dos prompts. Running CHKDSK /r (check disk and repair problems) I was told that I had an "Unrecoverable error on my HDD". Fine, screw the recovery console I ran BartPE (which also needs the CP cd to create the build of the program) and it tried to start but then i got another BSOD. What the fuck?! Everything I run gives me a BSOD, no software is working, one tool says my HDD is fine and the other says it's fucked. That is when I had the idea, "I wonder if it's my RAM". Open up computer, remove one stick, power on. Boom, normal boot up. To confirm I removed the other stick and stuck just the one I had just removed back in, then BSOD. There it is, bad RAM causes BSOD, remove RAM and upgrade (I am currently typing this with only 512mb, tough in this day and age). Moral of the story, if you get a BSOD and you did NOT a)just install new software b)just upgrade software c)just install a new OS for dual boot or d)just install a new Hardware device AND it's drivers this is most likely a hardware problem. Use tools to check your HDD, make sure your RAM is not the problem and make sure your fan is running. Graphics card is a little hard to diagnose, but if it's not the other three, then it probably is your Graphics card.

The wild cards here stands for RI and MP, two media industry powerhouses bent on suing their way back to more a favorable business model. For all those that say "Don't you believe people should be paid for the work they do?" my answer would be: Yes, if 1) These ridiculous lawsuits meant anything to the artists, songwriters and other creative persons who produced the work and not the CEO and shareholders of SONY who did nothing to influence the music/movies they are trying to protect and maybe never even heard of it and 2) If at the same time the industry was taking steps to give the buying public what it wants (GOOD digital distribution) and not sue it's on fan base.

This is an awesome article outlining the struggles of the people that these groups are actually suing. Of course it's all the college kids and single mothers that are bankrupting the music and movie industry and not lack of forward thinking business strategies and resistance to change in a world where they are pretty much useless.

I mean, if you know me you know I like Japanese culture, but these people sometimes get a little ahead of themselves in their attempts to live in the future, apparently a future where blackface is cool. These guys above basically believe you can't be in a soul band without being black, apparently it's fine if your speaking Japanese or english with thick Japanese accents, but you gotta be black. The funny thing is the group seems to be doing this as some type of tribute action to soul music and its African American roots, is this ok then?

The Radar piece I posted below (scanned from the mag; sorry Radar but I looked on your site and couldn't find this anywhere to link to it) has...I don't know what going on in it, but that girl in the lower left corner looks like Jughead from the old archie comics. The thing is backface wouldn't be so offensive if the actions that invariably follow it were not idiotic and ridiculous. Actors use make-up to portray themselves differently in order to create a mood for the audience. In that movie Soul Man from the 80's the make-up was used to set a situation and was not seen as terrible because the character was not using it to degrade the entire African American race. Just the same I can't automatically say that these Gyaru girls are guilty of anything really (although the whole contrast between the bronze and white is kind of weird and ghostly), but why even go there?

Lot of juicy and unbelievable articles today, so I will just link and use short comments. Got lots of work to do but I want to share some of this stuff with you.

-This month is the 10 year anniversary of the mp3 player. I definitely remember my buddy and I back in 1996 or '97 (can't remember now) talking about how dope this new "mp3 format" was going to be. I even made a mix tape (yes analogue) from a few mp3's that I had collected. I actually can't believe even at that time I was trying to own my digital media, I guess I have been down with pirating from the start.

-Apparently Apple's new Macbook Air is causing some security trouble at a few airports. Apparently is has already caused one guy to miss his flight. My questions: Do these people have TV's? How have you not seen one commercial about this product? Should we be trusting these dolts who believe "The lack of standard features causes a security concern" with our security?

-Battlebots is making a comeback! Along with futurama this is some very good news.

-Comcast might finally get its comeuppance if the FCC decides to take some undefined action against them. Or maybe they will just get a stern talking to from the governmental regulatory body. I would just like to say if an individual did something like this (stalling or dropping of information over a connection that is supposed to be undisturbed) I think they would already be in jail by now. I love how corporations get all the benefits but none of the drawbacks of being an "individual".

-The IFPI is considering taking the road that is currently being traveled by the RIAA here in the states. I hope they expect to become the target of public scorn and ridicule as well.

Waiting in Line 2...

So to my surprise I bought a Wii on Friday. It took me about 10 minutes of calling and a furious drive to a store about 20 minutes away to get one. For the record, the store had gotten in 3 units but only had one left when I called because two people were waiting at the store for them when they opened, damn you Nintendo and your forced scarcity. I basically bought the game for Super Smash Brothers:Brawl. For those of you who don't know, SSB is a game franchise from Nintendo that started out on the N64 system. If you attended college in the last 10 years and know anyone that was anyone who played video games on a semi-regular basis you know what this game is. If you don't stop reading because your were probably told about it and were just not interested enough to remember. Smash brothers is a 4 person free for all battle that despite its simplicity is regarded as one of the best fighting games ever (I'm not kidding, look it up). It uses Nintendo characters and characters that have been in Nintendo games. It only uses 4 buttons and is relatively easy to learn and hard to master. I bought my gamecube specifically to play SSB:Melee which was the second iteration of the game. This new version allows online play which should get anyone that knows about the game excited. The point is, the game is dope as hell which is why I am surprised I did not see the scene that confronted me at the mall when I went to pick it up...at midnight...on Saturday night/Sunday morning at a Gamestop that was having an actual release event for the game.

It was like 11:45 and I was sitting at home watching TV when I decided I should go. I knew from earlier in the day (when I was at the store reserving my game) that Gamestop would be open at 12am for the release but I never imagined I would show up. Realizing that I really had nothing else better to do I drove over totally expecting to show up, walk in, pick up my game and walk out. That was definitely not the case. As I entered the mall I saw a few heads standing around the Gamestop shop doors, this was of course from afar. As I got closer I realized that the people I saw were actually in front of a store a few shops down from Gamestop AND part of a surprisingly long line. My first thought was "REALLY?!" Come on now, this was ridiculous. This was not a console or anything, but a game on one of the three next-gen consoles currently out, and it had a line of good size waiting for it. I guess I was a bit naive but I still was pretty shocked, which turned to a feeling of uncomfortable boredom as I began hearing the awkward conversations and smelling the noticeable B.O. you usually hear and smell from people who would wait in line for a video game. Yes it's true that some of these people were my closest friends and still could be, but I was definitely in the contingent that took a step back and asked "How did I get here?", even as I shuffled forward in line. I even heard someone say in front of me "I used to make fun of these people and now I am one". Right with you brother, right with you.

...and go Giants!! I am not really a big football fan, but I have to love the embarrassment that the Giants were able to hand to the Patriots last night. What a good game.

Two stories here, both pretty ridiculous.

First the Chinese claim that they will be able to control the falling of rain for the Olympic games that are supposed to take place there. Since there is no roof for the Olympic stadium they have taken the next best option and decided to control rain fall instead, what a crazy people...

Also a cool but scary new web comic from Microsoft. Warning, to look at the archives Silverlight will be needed.

Multi-Tasking: Friend Or Foe?

This article is yet another I have read in a series poo-pooing the perceived benefits of multi-tasking. This article is almost always written by someone in their mid-thirties or later and talks of some bad incident they had with multi-tasking that must mean that it is bad for everyone. Usually supported by some scientific studies to be sure, it is their hypothesis that multi-tasking is the digital equivalent of the "Jack of all trades, master of none" idiom. Often "the children" are brought up as those that see MT'ing as the wave of the future but are so woefully misguided that they are obviously wrong in their assumptions. It is a wonder that these authors can't see their own arrogance for what it is.

I have said it before and I will say it again, there are a lot of humans. Meaning that while generalizations about the human psyche and brain can be made the way people handle tasks and life on a day to day basis is pretty varied. It is possible that while some may see MT'ing as a waste of time or a way to screw up two things at once, in actuality it should be judged on an individual basis. Because YOU can't check a text message and focus on the road you are driving on at the same time does not mean that others can't do those two tasks perfectly fine (and why do you have to check the message right away, as soon as you receive it??). While splitting the brain into two tasks might be detrimental to many, it does not mean it is detrimental to all. Whether people like it or not, technology is allowing us to do more things at once than we ever did, this is not always good but it certainly does not spell DOOM for those who choose to believe in MT'ing philosophies. I often watch tv and listen to music, an act I find really enjoyable and relaxing. I can chat with two different people using two different messaging clients as well as make a cd for a friend of mine while figuring out the main plans for the evening, and I would say I perform those tasks quite adequately.

For whatever reason as you get older the changes you see happen around you invariably become "too fast" or "unnecessary" and you find yourself wishing for a simpler time or one where things that were familiar to you still exist. Change is inevitable, much more so than ever before and it's time we all get used to perpetual and unending change in the things around us as we seek better and easier means to achieve given tasks.

Yes, I am back. This time I think for a little bit. A few things have occurred to me regarding blogs and how I use them. First off I don't need mad paragraphs for a post, even a few lines will do. Second I need an outlet for the myriad of things I find on the internet and need to share with anyone, even if that sharing is only imagined. Drink Or Die

A London based British Man just invented a small water bottle/filtration system that can filter out among other things fecal matter (poo) and viruses found in dirty water. He says that he hopes it can be used in disasters to help the people affected get quick & easy access to clean drinking water. Sounds awesome except that it costs ~$380.00. Great for this guy, bad for the refugees. You think our dear POTUS would have shelled out the $380/each for millions of bottles considering there are still people affected from that tragedy that have yet not received any financial aid from the Government? If he had, I am sure it would have been a huge disaster where he would have allotted 1 bottle for a family or something. You would probably need to prove you were actually in a family with birth certificates or something, all of which would have washed away in the flood. I know I am making this up but doesn't it read like something "ripped from the headlines?"

In other news Russians have just tested the world's most deadly non-nuclear weapon which works by creating a vacuum in the area of the blast and sucking the atmosphere right into the blast area. Effectively sucking the air out of your lungs until you are dead. All of this without the fall out of a normal nuclear weapon because that could obviously roll back onto your area and kill the people you were trying to protect. Also it fills the area with radiation stopping you from doing any recon or recovery. Awesome, A for caring. Just in case you were wondering, this is known as the "Dad of All Bombs", we in the US are much less safe because we only have the "Mother of All Bombs", weighing in at a mere 21,000 lbs.
